Nothing with a Name

“What makes anything worthy or unworthy of being photographed? For now, one of my mantras is: If it has an obvious name, don’t photograph it.”

Mike Slack, quote from Photo No-Nos

While reading the thought-provoking book Photo No-Nos, in which photographer Jason Fulford collected the words of other photographers explaining their photo taboos, I found the above quote from Mike Slack. I loved the photo challenge nature of these words: try to photograph only things that don’t have obvious names. Slack talks about being inspired by Gary Winogrand at the end of his life when started taking photographs of anything, photos that look like accidents. Winogrand said, “Any moment can be something.”
